Curriculum Dr. Alejandro Thiermann

Dr Alejandro Thiermann was born on 15 July 1947 in Chile. He obtained his doctorate of veterinary medicine degree from the University of Chile at Santiago and a PhD degree in microbiology and immunology from the School of Medicine at Wayne State University in Michigan.

When Dr Thiermann arrived in the US, he worked at the Johnson Spacecraft Center (NASA) in Houston, Texas. There he worked at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory, conducting a series of microbiological tests to determine whether any microorganisms could be detected in samples recovered from the lunar surface. He then transferred to the Health Applications Office; a technology transfer team. There Dr Thiermann worked to develop applications in the life sciences for the various technologies developed during the Apollo Missions (Digital technologies, infra-red imagery, etc). Dr Thiermann also worked to develop a model to support the screwworm eradication programme.

He began his career with the US Government in 1979 as the research leader for the leptospirosis and the mycobacterioses research laboratories in Ames, Iowa. He worked there for 7 years on leptospirosis in livestock; primarily cattle and pigs. It was at this time that Dr Thiermann received an award from USDA-ARS, as the scientist of the year.

Dr Thiermann joined USDA-APHIS in 1989 as the Deputy Administrator for International Services. In this capacity, he promoted APHIS’s role in trade facilitation and directed the overseas animal and plant health eradication and control programmes such as those for screwworm, foot and mouth disease, and Mediterranean fruit fly.

From 1997 to 1999 he was twice elected Chairman of the World Trade Organization’s, Sanitary and Phytosanitary (WTO-SPS) Committee. He was also an active member of US delegations to the negotiation of the Uruguay Round of the WTO, the drafting of the new International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), and also served for two years as the US Coordinator for the Codex Alimentarius.

From October 1996 and until September 2001, he served as Senior Trade Coordinator and Regional Director for USDA-APHIS in Brussels, with responsibilities for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and the former Soviet Republics.

He served in the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Standard Commission (the Code Commission) from 1994 until May 2015. In 1994 he was elected vice-president of the Code Commission. In 2000 he was elected President of the Code Commission.

After September 2001 until December 2015, Dr Thiermann was seconded to the OIE by the US Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (USDA-APHIS) to devote most of his time to the work of the OIE, serving as the special Adviser to the Director General, at OIE headquarters in Paris.

Dr Thiermann was re-elected president of the Code Commission in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012.

Dr Thiermann’s service on the Code Commission has been of tremendous value to the OIE during a period of significant expansion of the role of the OIE and increase in its membership, from 114 countries in 1990 to the current 180. Dr Thiermann’s fairness, impartiality and non-partisan leadership have been widely recognised by the OIE Delegates at the many General Sessions and Regional Commission conferences he has participated in. Dr Thiermann has also been a strong advocate for basing standards on the best and most up-to-date science.

He was author or co-author of numerous articles on Leptospirosis, and articles on brucellosis, mycobacteriosis, paratuberculosis, international trade, animal welfare, avian influenza and international standards of the OIE.

Dr Thiermann received Honours, in particular Presidential Executive Service Award, given by President Clinton. He is Honorary Member of the British Veterinary Association. He has been a member of American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Society of Microbiology.

Dr Thiermann is also an accomplished nature photographer and aquarist.

Please, join me in congratulating Dr Alejandro Thiermann, recipient of the OIE 2016 Gold Award.

EL COLEGIO MÉDICO VETERINARIO DE CHILE FELICITA AL DR. ALEJANDRO THIERMANN POR TODOS SUS LOGROS PROFESIONALES Y SU CONTRIBUCIÓN A LA COMUNIDAD VETERINARIA MUNDIAL.
